Announcement from the Co-Presidents of the International Association of Qualitative Inquiry (IAQI)
As Co-Presidents of the renewed IAQI, we are pleased to share updates on several important developments aimed at continuing support for qualitative research and enhancing the International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry (ICQI).
- Establishment of the IAQI Board of Directors: We have nominated esteemed colleagues to serve on the IAQI Board of Directors. This board will continue to guide the organization’s strategic direction.
- Transitioning IAQI to Non-Profit Status: We have completed the transition from IIQI (created and maintained by Norman Denzin to run the financial aspects of ICQI in the first 20 years) to the renewed IAQI. Here are the inaugural Board of Directors members: Marcelo Diversi (Washington State University, USA), Kathy Roulston (University of Georgia, USA), Roe Bubar (Colorado State University, USA), Gaile Cannella (Independent Scholar), César A. Cisneros Puebla (Universidad de Tarapacá, Chile), Patrick Lewis (University of Regina, Canada).
- Formation of the IAQI Advisory Committee: A dedicated group of volunteers, including representatives from Special Interest Groups (SIGs) and awards committees, has joined the IAQI Advisory Committee. This committee will be instrumental in guiding transitions and supporting ICQI’s sustainability. We plan to convene with the committee in the Fall of 2026 to outline next steps.
- Looking Ahead to the next ICQI: Our new IAQI Board of Directors decided that we are not able to organize an ICQI in 2026 (in-person or virtual). We sent out a recent memo to several ICQI participants of the last few years with a summary of the reasons why holding an in-person ICQI in 2026 was not possible. And in our last IAQI Board of Directors meeting, we voted against holding a virtual ICQI in 2026. The short story is that we do not have time to replace the two main ICQI organizers, Michael Giardina and James Salvo, and the organizing platform (our contract with Cvent ended this May and we are not in a position to renew a long-term contract with them). We will continue to try and broadcast this message in the next several months in order to reach as many colleagues as possible. We are working on building a new website for ICQI, which will be under the larger IAQI website umbrella, creating a current listserv for recent ICQI participants, and a bimonthly IAQI/ICQI Newsletter with information about activities and progress. Our goal is to relaunch ICQI in 2027 in an in-person format. We will also try to figure how to add a virtual option, either as a synchronous platform during the in-person congress or as a separate virtual platform shortly after the in-person gathering.
We thank you for your continued commitment to qualitative inquiry and look forward to your participation in upcoming conferences. In the meantime, please email us with your queries or comments.
